“It was the summer between high school and college. My best friend, Danna, was turning 18, and I was tasked with making the cake. My creation: a half-Barbie in the center of a bundt cake, which served as her gown. It was the first time I ever used a piping bag. A little cringe-worthy now, but 30 years ago it was a triumph!”

“As a ‘first,’ this cake shouldn’t have been this good. But it was. We all love dogs at Fancy Cakes, and I grew up with a beagle named Barney. I think all the elements fell together beautifully for my first try—and many, many more have followed!”

“No, I didn’t get to meet Gwen Stefani or Blake Shelton. Their wedding planner, Todd Fiscus, had their cake samples flown from Dallas to their ranch in Oklahoma on a helicopter. Melinda and I delivered the cake to their gorgeous home. We were all very quiet as we set up the reception in their backyard. But inside I was going B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Gwen wanted us to recreate her parents’ wedding cake. Todd wanted it as grand as possible. Ta-da! We absolutely loved the layers of meaning in this cake—and with almost 2 million views on social media, I think the rest of the world agreed.”

“Yes. It’s cake. Yes, the oysters are edible—even the shells, which were made from white chocolate. I have a clever staff of artists, and Jesse figured this one out. She created silicone molds from real oyster shells, melted white chocolate into the shell molds, then colored them with edible pigments. Crazy!”

“By far one of the most unique requests I’ve ever received. I wasn’t sure how the entire vision was going to come together, but when it came time to deliver the cake, I was blown away by how GRO Designs had transformed the Ritz-Carlton. The rest of my staff rushed over to see it for themselves. You wouldn’t believe how elaborate it was.”
